At least 10 people were killed and six more injured when a vehicle hit a landmine in the restive Kurram tribal region in northwest Pakistan on Thursday.

About 20 people were travelling in the vehicle. They were returning home to celebrate the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr festival.

The vehicle hit a landmine and exploded, killing 10 people, witnesses said.

The condition of three of the injured was described by local officials as critical.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack.

Hundreds of people have died due to sectarian violence and militant attacks in Kurram Agency over the past three years.

The region has been rocked by clashes between rival Shia and Sunni tribesmen.

With each vanquished opponent and each defiant shot into the swirling winds of Arthur Ashe Stadium, the matchup long coveted by tennis fans everywhere is steadily taking shape.

So far, not even the blustery conditions at the Billie Jean National Tennis Center have blown away the possibility of No. 1 Rafael Nadal and No. 2 Roger Federer meeting for the first time at the United States Open.

Both players look sharp, fluid and confident as they steamroll through the draw. Now only four players potentially stand between them and just one of them, Novak Djokovic, has won a Grand Slam event.

For the third consecutive year and the fourth over all, Djokovic’s opponent in the semifinals will be Federer, who on Wednesday night overcame the relentless wind that has played havoc with tennisballs throughout the tournament. Federer beat Robin Soderling, 6-4, 6-4, 7-5, in their quarterfinal match. It was the 13th time in 14 career meetings that Federer has defeated Soderling.

“I see it as a challenge and an opportunity to play differently,” Federer said of the gusty conditions. “It’s not easy, you know. It’s cold, everywhere it’s blowing into your ears and your eyes. I used to dislike it so much and now I’m on the other side. I take enjoyment out of it, actually.”

On Thursday, Nadal will play No. 8 Fernando Verdasco in their quarterfinal. Neither Nadal nor Federer has dropped a set yet. If they continue on this path, they would meet Sunday in the most anticipated Open final of the decade.

But first Federer must deal with Djokovic, whom he beat in the semifinals in each of the last two years, and in the final in 2007. Djokovic defeated Gaël Monfils of France, 7-6 (2), 6-1, 6-2, in their quarterfinal match earlier in the day.

Asked about facing Federer again, Djokovic shrugged it off. “I don’t want to think about the losses the last three years,” he said. “At the moment, I’m feeling very comfortable on the court and hopefully I can continue on.”

Federer, for his part, displayed his customary confidence in discussing his next match. “We’ve had some good matches over the years,” he said about his previous meetings with Djokovic. Federer added: “He’s obviously waiting for a breakthrough where he can win this title. But he’s obviously going through me and in the past he hasn’t been able to get it done.”

Federer had little difficulty Wednesday against Soderling, who grew up in Sweden playing much of the time indoors. Soderling, less athletic and less skillful than Federer, had particular difficulty with the high toss on his serve, which was left vulnerable to the gusts of wind.

Soderling’s worst moment came in the second set when he had just broken back to even the score at 2-2 and he was up by 40-0 with a juicy overhead in his sights. But the wind pushed the ball downward. Soderling bent his knees to get in position, but he slammed the ball into the net.

Then he hit a forehand long and a backhand into the net, and suddenly Federer had broken him again. Soderling had had his chance, and he blew it.

“Everybody who has tried to play tennis knows it is difficult in the wind,” Soderling said after the match. “But there is nothing you can do about it. I cannot change the weather.”

In the day session, the combination of swirling winds and the enormity of the occasion turned the quarterfinal match between Djokovic and Monfils into a gut-twisting affair for both players. Djokovic’s battle was volleying, an adventure he found maddening. Monfils was being driven batty by the wind moving his service toss, and he spent much of his afternoon muttering to himself.

Djokovic’s frustration was almost entirely unnecessary. His victory was full of incredibly athletic points and a psychology text full of negative body language, but it did not end up being dramatic.

“I was focused when I needed to be, and I’m just so happy to get through in such tough conditions,” Djokovic said. “The key to adjusting to the wind is good focus and patience. You try to hold your nerves the whole match, play one point at a time. I needed to stay focused and use the wind in my favor.”

So far, Djokovic’s tournament has gone relatively smoothly, after he came from two-sets-to-one down against his Serbian Davis Cup teammate, Viktor Troicki, in the first round.

But Wednesday’s match was fraught with danger, and only partly because the 25-mile-an-hour wind swirled unpredictably through Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Before the match, Monfils predicted the crowd would be in his corner. He is a popular player here, because of his entertaining style of play and his professed love of New York City and the fans. But while Monfils usually engages those fans during his matches, exhorting them to cheer, he was too busy in this one chastising himself for his faltering game.

“I knew when it’s a little bit of wind I get in trouble, but wind like this for me is very tough,” Monfils said.

When Monfils’s last shot of the match flew astray, Djokovic reacted as much with relief as with joy. He said he did not mind at all that fans here seem to be rooting for Federer to play Nadal in the final, something he is trying to spoil. “I like playing under the radar a little bit,” Djokovic said. “It takes a little pressure off my side.”

One place where Djokovic is not underplayed is in his own box. His father, Srdjan, has spent thetournament there wearing a T-shirt with a large decal of Novak’s face. Djokovic, shaking his head and laughing, said he did not know where his father bought the T-shirt, although it was probably in Belgrade.

“He’s my father; if he wants to wear the shirt, he can wear the shirt,” he said. “I would never wear theshirt.”

Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated to honor Lord Ganesha. The festival falls in the Hindu month of Bhaadrapada, starting on the shukla chaturthi (fourth day of the waxing moon period). This corresponds to the month of August – September, according to the Gregorian calendar. It is believed Lord Ganesha, the Hindu elephant-deity, should be worshipped first. By doing so, all the obstacles are banished, whenever one commences something fresh and new. Therefore, people head towards Lord Ganesha temple to worship the deity, whenever they are about to undertake any new thing, say a project, business or education.

Ganesh Chaturthi commemorates the God, who is known by as many as 108 different names some of the popular names of Lord Ganesha are ‘Gajanana’ (Elephant faced deity), ‘Ganapati’ (Lord of All Ganas), ‘Vinayak’ (Lord of all). The festival is also called Vinayaka Chaturthi. It is believed that on the day, Lord Ganesha bestows his presence on earth to bless his devotees. The festival is celebrated with great fanfare and religious observance. People celebrated the birthday of Lord Ganesha (Ganesha Chaturthi) by dedicating the entire day to the worship of the deity.

Artistically sculpted oversized idols of Lord Ganesha are made out of clay, mud or Plaster of Parisespecially for Vinayaka Chaturthi, few months prior to the festival. Huge puja pandals (canopy) are raised to offer prayers. The idol is taken out on a procession during the day, amidst a long congregation of devotees. The devotees dance to the tune of traditional drums and sing Lord Ganesha, while they take their deity on the procession. This may take almost a couple of hours, because the idol is taken to almost every street of the city, where the puja pandal is set up.

The idol of Lord Ganesha is installed at the pandal in the evening, when prayers are offered by the devotees. Bhajans are sung either by a professional troupe of musicians or by the devotees themselves. The puja culminates by an extensive aarti and feasting. Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with great enthusiasm across different parts of the country. It is one of the very important festivals inMaharashtra, Andhra Pradesh. Ganesh Chaturthi is the biggest festival for the Konkanis in Goa. People observe fast for the entire day and break it only after offering puja to the deity, in the evening.

It will be family time for Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar when he ushers into a new year of his life.

The actor, who turns 43, Thursday is planning to spend time with his family on his birthday.

“I’ll be celebrating my birthday with my family. We’ll be going out to a nice place to eat. I work to live life to the fullest. So hoping to spend some nice time with my family,” said Akshay.

Akshay, who is married to Twinkle Khanna, has a seven-year-old son. He has appeared in over 90 Bollywood fims. He made his acting debut with the 1991 film Saugandh.

During the 1990s, Akshay acted mostly in action films like Khiladi (1992), Mohra (1994) and Sabse Bada Khiladi (1995), and was particularly known for his appearances in feature films commonly called the Khiladi Series.

He also did romantic films like Yeh Dillagi (1994) and Dhadkan(2000), but his comic performances in films such as Hera Pheri (2000), Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004), Garam Masala (2005) and Waqt: The Race Against Time (2005) met with acclaim.

In 2008, the University of Windsor in Ontario, Canada conferred an Honorary Doctorate of Law on Akshay in recognition of his contribution to Indian cinema. In 2009, he was awarded the Padma Shri by the Indian government.
