Microsoft Windows 7
Microsoft had dug itself a cool, deep, dark hole with Windows Vista. Users demanding that Redmond extend the life of Windows XP wasn’t exactly something they could be proud of, either. Bombarded by complaints and negative press even after the first service pack was released, the bar had been set high for Vista’s successor: Windows 7. This review is based on an official copy of the Windows 7 RTM that Microsoft provided to CNET on July 30, 2009.
Luckily for Microsoft, Windows 7 is more than just spin. It’s stable, smooth, and highly polished, introducing new graphical features, a new taskbar that can compete handily with the Mac OS X dock, and device management and security enhancements that make it both easier to use and safer. Importantly, it won’t require the hardware upgrades that Vista demanded, partially because the hardware has caught up, and partially because Microsoft has gone to great lengths to make Windows 7 accessible to as many people as possible.
It’s important to note that the public testing process for Windows 7 involved one limited-availability beta and one release candidate, and constituted what some have called the largest shareware trial period ever. As buggy and irritating as Vista was, Windows 7 isn’t. Instead, it’s the successor to Windows XP that Microsoft wishes Vista had been, and finally places it on competitive footing with other major operating systems like OS X and Linux.
Microsoft is offering six versions of Windows 7: Starter, Home Premium, Professional, Ultimate, OEM, and Enterprise. The three versions that Redmond will be promoting most heavily are Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate, although Starter will also be available to consumers.
Windows 7 will support both 32-bit and 64-bit systems. The bare minimum requirements for the 32-bit include a 1GHz processor, 1GB RAM, 16GB available hard-disk space, and a DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver. 64-bit systems will require at least a 1 GHz processor, 2GB RAM, 20GB of free space on your hard drive, and a DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver. A touch-screen monitor is required to take advantage of the native touch features. Do note that some users have claimed to have limited success running the Windows 7 beta with less than 1GB of RAM, but that’s not recommended.
Installation
Microsoft is offering several paths to install Windows 7. People can buy a new computer with the operating system already installed, upgrade from Windows XP or Vista, or do a clean install on a computer the user already owns. The clean installation took us about 30 minutes, but that will vary depending on your computer.
The upgrade procedure is different depending on whether you’re running Windows XP or Windows Vista. Vista users merely need to back up their data before choosing the Upgrade option from the install disc. Both XP Home and XP Pro users will have to back up their data, then choose Custom from the install disc. Custom will have the same effect as a clean install, although it’ll save your old data in a folder called Windows.old. Once you choose Custom, you’ll need to select the partition of your hard drive that contains Windows XP, and then follow the instructions to enter your product key and allow the computer to reboot as needed.
If you’re not sure if your current computer can run Windows 7, you can download and run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor from Microsoft.
Volkswagen buys $2.5 billion Suzuki stake
Germany’s Volkswagen AG will buy a one-fifth stake in Suzuki Motor Corp for $2.5 billion, tapping the Japanese firm’s expertise in small cars and dominance in India as VW seeks to become the No.1 automaker. The move is the second coup this week for ambitious VW Chairman Ferdinand Piech, coming on the heels of the German carmaker’s 3.9 billion euro ($5.8 billion) purchase of a 49.9 percent stake in sports car maker Porsche AG.
Piech’s top lieutenant, VW Chief Executive Martin Winterkorn, was hopeful the Suzuki alliance would help catapult the Wolfsburg-based carmaker past industry leader Toyota Motor Corp ahead of plan.”If that succeeds faster (than 2018), we’re happy,” a grinning Winterkorn told reporters as he sat next to Suzuki’s nearly 80year-old CEO Osamu Suzuki at a Tokyo press conference. CEO Suzuki repeated that he did not intend the company he has led for three decades to come under VW’s control.
“I don’t want you to misunderstand: Suzuki is not becoming a 12th brand for Volkswagen,” Suzuki said when asked whether the company might get a German CEO in the future. “I don’t want other folks telling me how to do things.”With the global car industry facing still fragile demand, chronic overcapacity and stricter environmental regulations, automakers are joining forces to save billions each would need to develop state-of-the-art powertrains. more>>
Telangana state to be carved out of Andhra Pradesh
India’s plan to carve a Telangana state out of Andhra Pradesh on Dec. 11 sparked statehood demands in other parts of Asia’s third largest economy in a new challenge to the Congress party-led government. In a surprise move, the government announced on Dec. 10 that it would push for the formation of a new state after a week of violent protests and a hunger strike by a leading politician shut down business in the state’s PIB high-tech Hyderabad city.Since independence in 1947 India has had to balance the challenges of maintaining different peoples under one federal system as well as the relationship between central power in the capital Delhi and the states of the world’s largest democracy.
The Gorkhas, ethnic Nepalis, in West Bengal called for an indefinite strike from Dec. 11 demanding their own “Gorkhaland” to protect their heritage. Other groups also made statehood demands. The Congress party, which heads the ruling coalition, returned to power for a second term by a wider-than-expected margin in May, freeing it from the communists who scuppered many reforms in exchange for their support to the last government. more>>
Amitabh Bachan interview-paa film
Ratnam means to him, and of course “Paa”.
Q: The fact that you are playing your father’s father in “Paa” is unique in itself but you are also playing a young politician in the film. That’s also unusual, isn’t it?“I was very excited when (director) Balki told me that he wanted to make my character a politician because I was very keen to show a politician in good light. Unfortunately, we typecast politicians in our films and there is a cliché of a politician who wears a Nehru cap, wears a sadri (traditional Indian garb), chews paan and is corrupt.
“I wanted to show that there are politicians who are forward thinking and can do good things.
Amol Arte is not corrupt. He is a good guy and I think everyone’s faith in politicians will be rebestowed after this film.”
Q: This is also a movie that has quite a radical subject, doesn’t it?“Well, for starters, the film isn’t about progeria. That is just a background. Progeria was a second thought and I don’t mean that with any disrespect. Balki came up with the idea that he wanted me to play my father’s father and we set about looking for a plausible reason to do that.
How do you have me and my father in the same frame and make it look believable? That’s when Balki came upon progeria which is a very unfortunate disease where the human body ages much faster than it is supposed to.
“People with progeria have a very distinct look, so the makeup was right there. We did take a few creative liberties. But the film is not about progeria and nor does it show the tragic life of a progeria victim. It’s a happy film and you will definitely leave the theatre with a smile on your face. It’s a film about a father and a son.” more>>
Bulk SMS:
Short sms service is developed and launched by IMImobile, a Hyderabad based company. I decided to take a look at the site which Provides Bulk SMS Service (I am guessing to each user) announcing their launch, It’s got to be BIG right? Don’t be surprised, it aint that big of a deal!
My first impressions, it was launched in hurry and it have Bulk SMS Gateway. I say that because features like user profiles & password change is missing, support is a mailto link, Few pages do NOT link back to the homepage, so there is absolutely now way you can get back to the homepage by clicking on a link, even after signing in, every time a user visits the homepage login is required, “Coming Soon” on a page or two and some basic functionality is missing from the site.
Using the bulk-SMS service, students just have to send an SMS with ‘RESULT’ to ‘56263′ to receive their results and using SMS Marketing is also available here.
Good Stuff:
I like the service, few features are really good, provides SMS service at cheap rates.
Stuff needs improvement:
Site needs to fix its navigation, include the basic features and re-visit its existing functionality.
